This newly updated edition explains the basics of installing and using SCSI and how to work with SCSI IDs, LUNs, termination, parity checking, asynchronous and synchronous transfer, bus mastering, caching, Ultra2/LVS, RAID, and much more. Clear drawings, diagrams, pinout tables, troubleshooting tips and tricks, an extensive glossary and a comprehensive index make this book an indispensable reference. This edition also includes new or expanded coverage of:
* SCSI 3 with a revised, more in-depth explanation of SCSI
* Performance tuning for the SCSI subsystem
* Device drivers
* New directions in the SCSI and storage industry
And for the first time, this edition includes a CD-ROM with SCSI diagnostic tools and utilities and ASPI programming examples, as well as a searchable copy of the book for quick referencing. Available in bookstores or from No Starch Press (http://www.nostarch.com, 1-800-420-7240), THE BOOK OF SCSI is the source for all things SCSI.
Gary Field has worked with device level software since 1978. In 1985, while at Wang laboratories, he was involved with SCSI on MSDOS platforms, and later led the development of an ANSI CAM subsystem for several UNIX platforms. He has maintained the Usenet comp.periphs.scsi FAQ list since 1994. In 1996, Gary joined Digital Equipment Corp. (now Compaq Corp.) as a principal software engineer in their UNIX I/O development group.
". . .includes the basic fundamentals of SCSI as well as advanced
information for experienced users who want to tweak their systems for
more power and speed."--GRAFIXWORLD, 11/02
